Nathalie Emmanuel

Nathalie Joanne Emmanuel was born on March 2, 1989. Emmanuel started her acting career in the theatre in the latter part of the 90s. She was involved in parts in West End musicals like The Lion King. Her acting career began in the year 2006 in Sasha Valentine, a soap opera. After that she was cast in several British television shows including the sequel Maze Runner. Her mother is Dominican. Her father is half-Saint Lucian, half English. She has an older sister. Emmanuel recalled that her mother first became aware of her interest and determination to become an actress during Emmanuel's attendance at the independent St Hilda's School, which ended in 2014 and later the Westcliff High School for Girls grammar school. She stated that she first noticed her love for acting when she was only three years old. Her mother then encouraged her to attend singing, dancing, as well as acting classes. In the West End production of The Lion King, Young Nala was cast as the role as Young Nala. The following year, she was cast in Game of Thrones as Missandei Daenerys Targaryen's interpreter. In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, she confirmed that she had received the news about winning the role when she was employed at a store selling clothes as shop assistant. In 2015, Emmanuel was promoted to an actor in the series. Missandei was the only prominent character that was a woman of colour in the show, and her death scene, which occurred during her time in chains was not popular with viewers who viewed it as an instance of savagery and conjuring an image of slavery.Emmanuel later told The Guardian: The reaction to the death of Missandei was massive because she was not the only one. I'm convinced that many of those who felt disenfranchised or marginalized felt a connection with her or felt represented by her particularly women of colour. It was difficult for people to let her gone, particularly when it happened in the way that she was treated. That's what they're going take the one woman of color.
